It is not, however, intended in any way to be a substitute for the larger works on Antiseptic Surgery; for without a thorough knowledge of the scientific basis of wound treatment, Of its development as shown by its history, and of what it can do, the best results are not likely to be Obtained, nor can progress be made. In the introductory chapters I have treated of matters which were not ripe for discussion when my work on Antiseptic Surgery was written and thus I hope that the two volumes will furnish the reader with as complete a View of the subject as is possible at the.
